World Food Day, Oct. 16th

World-Food-Day

Join us this Friday, October 16 in a virtual toast to farmers as we honor World Food Day. With world hunger reduced from 18.6% in 1992, down to 10.9% in 2014, there’s reason to celebrate this milestone (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).

Did you know? According to the World Farmer’s Organization, “Farmers are instrumental in fighting hunger and finding concrete remedies to address issues affecting food insecurity and nutrition.” That’s why we are proud to bring attention and join our fellow farmers in honoring endeavors to provide healthy, safe food for our customers and community members everywhere.

How Does Hollandia join the fight against hunger? We are involved in the community throughout the year. We’ve donated over 100,000 heads of our Living Butter Lettuce and Watercress to the Santa Barbara County Food Bank and Ventura FOOD Share. We’ve also contributed salad bars to area schools as part of United Fresh Foundation’s “Let’s Move Salad Bars to California Schools” campaign.

One reason Hollandia Produce is able to be a consistent food bank contributor is our farming method. Conventional field-grown crops are reliant on the weather for their annual yield. Hollandia’s crops are protected and nurtured by our greenhouses and our hydroponic growing practices. Our growing methods allow us to reduce our water consumption by up to 84% over conventional farming and yields up to 3.5 times the leafy greens.

Join us and celebrate World Food Day 2015 by posting a picture of yourself with your glass raised and include a personalized toast on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with #ToastAFarmer and #WFT2015. Don’t forget to tag us @livegourmet!

Prepare to be Marketed To: Fruits and Vegetables Take Center Stage

Looks like 2015 may have just gotten a whole lot healthier, thanks to a new ad campaign called: FNV, the cool, new way to refer to fruits and vegetables. Here, at Hollandia Produce, we couldn’t be happier. As farmers ourselves and longtime supporters of Produce for Better Health, we’ve been promoting healthy eating and the benefits FNV for years!fnv logo

Boulder, Colorado-based ad agency Victors & Spoils, whose client list includes juggernauts Coca-Cola and General Mills, just put America on notice with their in-your-face “Prepare to be marketed to” campaign video teaser.

green healthy foodThe pro-healthy eating campaign will start primarily on social media networks like Twitter, posting short videos featuring actress Jessica Alba and NFL quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton. Additional videos will be released in coming days starring Curry, New York Giant Victor Cruz, actress Kristen Bell, and others.

Replete with its own fashionable logo, the FNV campaign is the brainchild of Partnership for a Healthier America, that was created in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to get families to eat better and exercise more.

Michael Jacobson, Executive Director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest noted that an advertising campaign for fruits and vegetables may be powerful in influencing eating decisions, but that its effectiveness will depend on how much support the campaign receives. What do you think? Will athletes and actors purporting the benefits of FNV be enough? Only time will tell; stay tuned!

In the meantime, feed your curiosity and your body with this delicious superfood salad and this entertaining video clip.

Hollandia Produce Sponsors Walk for Hope

At Hollandia Produce, we believe a diet rich in healthy fruits and vegetables and regular exercise are fruit-and-veggieskeys to better health and cancer prevention. That’s why we are proud to sponsor today’s Walk for Hope on November 2, 2014 and help support the City of Hope in its efforts to raise awareness and funds to fight these sometimes fatal diseases.

Every year, far too many women must battle breast and gynecologic cancers. These are the women we love: our mothers, our wives, our sisters and our friends. Walk for Hope is a movement that unites survivors and supporters — women, men and children — in the fight against women’s cancers.

Hope is on the horizon, and your commitment can make a difference. If you would like to join us in this effort, you can set your fitness goal, or simply donate what you can. Together, we can build a world without women’s cancers.
